Falling asleep was impossible. On one side, he had the possibility that Valko was the one who damn near killed a large portion of the student body. On the other side was just that, a body. Warm, soft, and begging to be introduced properly to his cock. The two subjects demanded so much of his attention that he couldn’t find a peaceful thought to guide him to sleep.

Liam did his best to keep the two thoughts separated. He started with Valko to reduce the chance that he’d slip into Adora’s bedroom. History was full of examples where love had made somebody do something utterly stupid, which gave Valko all the motive in the world. Liam didn’t understand why he would risk poisoning everyone though, not until he dug a bit deeper. If Liam had been the only one to die, then Adora would have brought up the fact that Valko had cornered him to Neklamoor. But, if Liam and some other students had succumbed to the poison, then his death would have been lost in the shuffle with the other students. It was psychotic, yet clever enough that he had to respect the man’s intellect.

The plan started to unfold. He would talk to Neklamoor as soon as the headmaster arrived in his office. If Valko didn’t show up for work, then he’d show his hand, just like Berkins had two weeks ago. If the guy did show up, then Liam could summon Nesaphine to sniff around all of the janitor’s closets to see if she could find the poison. That wouldn’t point to Valko directly, not when there was an entire custodial staff employed by the academy, but it would keep Liam heading in the right direction.

Having multiple phases to his plan helped him settle in and fall asleep, but only for a few hours. The stove showed it was three in the morning, leaving him with three more hours to go until the dorms would unlock. Sleep wouldn’t come at that point, so he fished out whatever book happened to be in his satchel and pulled the curtains open a few inches. The streetlamp poured over his Alchemy book as he picked up where he left on in the hope that the text would lull him back to sleep. It didn’t. The information was stimulating, actually. He read through five chapters before a car passed on the street below, reminding him to check the stove. 5:45. Close enough in his opinion, so he quietly rose from the couch and changed into the clothes he wore last night. He didn’t want to be rude, so he folded up the blanket before leaving.

He couldn’t remember the last time he rose before the world, so to speak. Sure, he’d come home at such an hour, but never had his day started so early. The city was nearly as quiet as the apartment, with only a sparse car here and there to break the silence. The buses were running though, freeing him from having to take a forty-five-minute walk through the morning chill.
